A tribute to the Late Tom Lock & Toppie Jansen by Egbert O'Kelly
Today a good pigeon friend of mine phoned me. We had a chat about this and that, and then he told me the story of a fancier discussing the Tom Lock Pigeons with him.
He insisted that the Tom Locks as well as all the other local South African pigeon families has become to slow,(See race results of 2 ACE PIGEONS later in Article to proof this wrong) and he has imported some MODERN PIGEONS that are faster, more reliable, than any Tom Locks in South Africa.
I just listened, nodded, and listened again to all that was said.
Of course, being an avid Importer of Belgium pigeons myself, we all "HOPE" that these great new imports shall change our racing careers for the better. Huge sums of money is spent overseas to purchase these new hopefulls. Some are good, but some are just as bad.
I have long ago learnt to stop HOPING and WAITING for these super birds from overseas to change our world. Certainly the De Rauw Sablon/M. Aelbrecht strain has already done that for us, BUT they were crossed with our R100 000 & R80 000 Tom Lock lines as well as our R50 000 Sirens/Oscar lines which are proven local Champion making Families.
All I wish to say, is that when you have these superior pigeons, pigeon racing becomes easy, and only then do you also understand what a small role all the expensive "MUTI'S" actually plays in obtaining top results season after season.
Success in our opinion comes from the following:
*Breeders with 5 generations of SUPER BREEDER and SUPER RACERS in their pedigrees. That is why a pedigree is so important to us. It is also the only way to determine if you are actually linebreeding to the original SUPER BREEDER and SUPERRACERS to actually try and capture the super genetcis of the true champions. Normally when you line breed 2 top families, and then cross them, you again find the "BASTERKRAG", and an explosion of super performance again apperas. From these top racers you add them back into the existing families they originate from. THUS blood refreshment.
*360 days of hard work to keep the breeders, babies and racers healthy.
*Fittness is of utmost importance-Gooi the SASOL!
*Common sense and NOT lending your ears out to someone different every week to race on the latest "WONDER MUTI"-There is no such a thing that can make you win. PERIOD....The PIGEON wins, not the water he drinks.
*A well ventilated loft that is not overpopulated.
*Lastly, but not the least, FAITH IN YOUR PIGEONS!
This is what faith in 3 top breeding pairs, THE R100 000, R80 000 (2 X Union Winner son to EGG COCK), and River Loft Pairs (R100 000 Egg Cock x 30116) has produced for us and other fanciers that also believed in them, and still do!!!
The R100 000 SUPER EGG COCK, SA 29596/98, Foundation Cock. Sire to 38 wins himself.
Without any doubt one of THE VERY BEST STOCK COCKS EVER PRODUCED ON SOUTH AFRICAN SOIL .
Let us look at the results of only 2 pigeons from this line. There are MANY, but let's keep it SIMPLE SAM with 2 examples of the latest super stars in our loft as 4 month old squickers going into their first race.?! Believe it or not..........
Study the velocities this super racer has flown as well as the distances. A TOTAL ALLROUNDER!!
NOT FAST ENOUGH?? "CHECK their TRACK RECORD". Amazing PIgeons. They race ANY DISTANCE, ANY VELOCITY!!
these pigeons are reliable, fast, but can also handle 1000 velocities with ease and have endurance.
